I would take the miles any day and the upside of not eating food is it can help with overcoming jet lag quicker.
Food while important to some is not the entire experience. Also Virgin could have had the lounge cater the food for all cabins.
Or was the lounge affected too? Was booze available? If so on an empty stomache would be interested to see the outcome .
