Not an apologist, but signs at the gate/announcements were a must. But, if you would've stopped, people would have missed connections and complained. If you got pizza, the gluten frees and business class people would have complained and so on and so on.
A no win scenario.
Such a gate announcement/sign would probably cause chaos and departure delay - people would try to buy things, were late for boarding etc... I was not on the flight (and probably none of the contributors to this thread), but I would expect profound apology from chief purser or from captain shortly after boarding closed and perhaps offer of some compensation from VA. Anything else could potentially cause more harm than good...
But don't take me wrong - VA did screw up big time...
