I have the French Gold FB Amex since 1999. I read several times in FT that you could have the annual fee waived when you spend more than a certain sum every year. So I tried last year or 2 years ago and my request was declined. I have also been able to waive the fees this year (september 2017) after 34k€ of spending. I have just ask telling I had spent a lot this year and that I was holding the card for 10 years.
The last 2-3 years, I forgot to call...
Previously, I was able to waive 50% (twice) or to get 10000 award miles (twice) depending of the years.
No reason to pretend to cancel the card...just beg for a discount.
Never tried or get tempted with plat card as I consider it makes no sense if you are not yourself a plat member within flying blue.
