The chips on my cards got marks pretty quickly after I started using them and I wasn't forcing them at all.
On that note, I've heard complaints about the chips on US cards being less reliable. I suspect the lack of contactless is a big reason why.
It may be more unreliable because we do use the chip more than most other countries, not only because of lack of contactless, but we use our cards more for everything and anything. We aren’t afraid to charge $3 whereas in other countries, it’s mostly unheard of and you just use cash. The US uses cards more as a whole, and that’s why we seem to run into more issues than other countries as well in terms of EMV migration.
