If I book Sun Dec 9 - Sat Dec 15, rates are $269 for a double/double and $369 for an exec suite.
Staying 1 extra day saves ~$800 after taxes. I'm reserving a double double (in case I decide to go to the conference alone), and a suite (in case the family comes along) and lock this down. AGU is a big enough conference to put upward price pressure next summer/fall when people book.
When I get my TSU's next year (octoberish) I may have to re-evaluate (the GH has a much nicer suite for a TSU upgrade...)
I would lock in to whatever you can now even if it means coming a day earlier which would mean that your airfare is also less. I used the AGU hotel booking service one year for the Hyatt Regency near Fisherman's wharf and ended up cancelling late in the game for some reason. When I went to look at my reservation they moved me to another hotel in the same area without notifying me. If I had gone, I would have been p-oed.
