I've flown China Southern a bunch of times in both first & business - their seats are great.

I've flown China Eastern a few times in business - also great seats.

I've never encountered smoke smells.

Don't forget the Taiwanese airlines - Eva and China Airlines. They are great, and also have some good premium fares.
