For Australia if you are based in the UK I would certainly suggest looking at Ex-EU or even other carriers. The Avios required to Australia (and the taxes) are significant. Booking on a revenue ticket also means you EARN Avios/other points, whereas on top of an Avios redemption to Australia you also miss out on earning any Avios at all for what is a good earning route.

I would also suggest waiting for Black Friday if booking any Australia deals. Last year Garuda Indonesia had a flight LHR-MEL in Business for £1050..... it was pretty good and I used the points through another programme.
