I'd call again and ask someone else. I just changed (last week) my 7 night cert (Cat. 7) from the Puerto Vallarta resort and instead of applying it to my new reservation as I asked they cancelled it and gave my 105K points instead.
No big deal as I just called them up and got it fixed, but they obviously can redeposit those certs if they want to.
I have never had to cancel one, but as recently as a couple months ago have been able to extend certificates, and they do it without hesitating. I have never not found a way to utilize a 7-night certificate not have I had to cancel one for a refund!
