what happens to a no-show for an award flight (in F)?

i have a friend booked a round trip award ticket from FRA to LAX on LH in F. he is not very experienced with loyalty programs and such and he has no status on any airline.

I was suggesting that he allot extra time when driving to LAX for the return in case of bad traffic, accidents, etc. He agreed that it was a good idea but he insists that it's okay if he misses his flight since there are other flights back to europe after his ticketed one. I expressed my belief that a no-show will cause him to lose his ticket but he insists that the miles and more phone agents told him that it's a flexible first class ticket and if he misses his flight, they'll just put him on the next one. i can't believe this would be true, especially if there is no award availability on other flights. this would make it so easy to abuse the system since you could book an early flight that had availability and then "miss" it to get booked on the later one that you wanted.

i searched on this forum and looked through the miles and more T&C and can't find a definite answer. i would be extremely grateful if anyone could shed some light on this subject. thanks.
