Sounds like all is going to work out so don't condemn a entire chain because of it, I've had my share of minor billing issues at CY, SHS & RI over the years and they are always caused by some clerk at the local property.
If the reservation was cancelled, why was it still in my Marriott app, why no email from them, why didn't the guy at the property say anything? Makes no sense.
While I do not wish to condemn the entire chain, this shouldn't be happening and Marriott as a whole is responsible that such events do not happen. And it sounded like they are aware that this does happen occasionally, so I do not understand why they do not put in place measures to catch things.

Either way, since it's getting fixed, I think you, as a technical person, would agree with me that this was just a misunderstanding, not some scheme to part travelers from their monies.
I didn't misunderstand what she said, because I repeated it here. There is probably nothing sinister, but Marriott dropped the ball here and unless I noticed would have been quite happy to have the greater sum. Begs the question of how often it happens to people and how many don't notice for whatever reason.
