While general basic insurance doesn't cover canceling because you changed plans, there are policies available with coverage even for "cancel for any reason" (albeit at a premium above normal cancelation reasons and often with the refund being less than 100%). So such a policy can be a viable option for cancelation for any reason, if the insurance cost and potential payout would be worth it compared to the impact of not having it.
agree with you. However what I meant i that generally if you buy the insurance after you bought the flight, the insurance will not cover you, at least in Europe: you can't buy an insurance to cover something that you already knew was kind of problematic.
