Worth the extra stop for the chance of an upgrade?

Considering a mileage run from OAK-JFK on the cheap UA fares and to catch 2 of the final Phish shows in Coney Island..

On the return, I can go JFK-LAX-OAK on UA metal, 767 in E+ or LGA-CLT-LAX on US and LAX-OAK on UA.

Given that this will be on a US ticket, and I'm only a Silver, is it worth going out of my way to try for the upgrade via CLT? The load on the CLT-LAX leg is pretty light next Saturday afternoon and it's a 321.. but then again, a 767 JFK-LAX in E+ isn't to shabby compared to the sad state of domestic first.

Suggestions?
