Air Europa Expectations

I have flown with Air Europa in both business and economy class on the following fleet types/routes and below are my experiences which seem to differ from many here.

MIA-MAD-MIA 787 in Coach
MIA-MAD-MIA 787 in Business
AMS-MAD-AMS A330 in Coach
AMS-MAD-AMS B737 in Coach
AMS-MAD-AMS B737 in Business
AMS-MAD-AMS EMB 190 in Business

On the 787 in both Coach and Business I found the hard product to be superior to the offering by IB on the A330 and American B772 (Old product). I found the AA B772 New product and 787 to be roughly equivalent.

Service on Air Europa, American and Iberia are all frankly inconsistent. Generally in coach I have been pleased with the service. In Business class American used to have the best food options but over the last year or two they have really dropped in quality. Iberia is a consistent mediocre which now is the match for all 3 carriers on the route.

Skyteam Elite Plus has always been recognized with priority check in, Lounge access and addl baggage allowance. I may have had to prompt it but never had it denied or refused or even argued. Never the experiences outlined by other after multiple trips (FYI - I was doing this city pair at least 1-2x a month for 2+ years and feel that I have enough with all three carriers to give a representative sample.

Upgrades with Air Europa are EXTREMELY RARE! They typically need to be oversold in coach to even consider which only happens during holiday breaks.

One time an unsolicited upgrade was offered MIA-AMS by Swissport.

Typically, I can be booked in the bulkhead row of the 787 at no addl charge as elite plus.

Here is where inconsistent is the keyword.

Check in MAD is Air Europa and AMS is KLM - Check in is always Skypriority/Business class and excess baggage allowance and priority security access is granted all times.

E190 Business class - Why bother. Other then a meal and beverages it is not worth anything. I made a huge mistake booking business on this aircraft type

B737 Business / Coach - Standard Euro offerings same as KLM/Iberia Express (Iberia no longer offers full service on the route)offerings except that KLM offers free meals and beverages. Business class on the three in this aircraft type is near identical except that KLM offers friendlier service. Air Europa and Iberia Express have younger crews.

A330 Business / Coach - During high holiday periods Air Europa will often run a widebody aircraft on this route. Boarding tends to run long but the business class cabin exceeds any intra european offerings by IB or KL and hence I tend to book it when I see it. Typically sold in the cheapest J class fares as typically have an abundance of seats available. A330 in coach is another story. On the 2 side it is fine, 2 side exit row or bulkhead is good especially as Elite Plus gets the pre reserved seats free when you call Air Europa reservations in advance. Meals in coach are pay to eat along with beverage same as Iberia Express so nothing exceptional.

As with many carriers, I have had to call the res line to get my seats as the online portal does not often allow prime seats for Elite Plus without calling reservations.

I like Air Europa on the two above mentioned routes especially when on 787 international or A330 Intra Europa.

The Air Europa E190 is good in coach but avoid Business

Last comments - KLM is most polished service by far, Air Europa, Transavia (worst option), and Iberia Express are about the same.

Other items - Consider Vueling thru BCN for low fares on clean new aircraft but no status or mileage options for US flyers.
