On domestic flights, AA offers the PE seats as MCE. Unfortunately it's not possible to buy up to MCE on an award ticket, so I'm afraid you're out of luck with regards to getting a PE seat ahead of time. You can always keep an eye on the seatmap and ask at the airport.
If AA opens up U space you can definitely switch for no fee, so keep an eye on that.
