I see several suggestions that the OP should have presented both his/her work permit and an eTA.

The IATA / Timatic link I provided makes it crystal clear that no eTA needs to be presented to travel (for a German citizen with a valid work permit/visa).

It seems to me that someone at BA failed to read beyond line 1.
