As others mention, CX does not offer Load Factor Upgrade/Upfare. OW is always more expensive than RT, but $1,000 is reasonable from Q to E (most likely).
To clarify (though I don't think it will make a difference to the response ), it was a return ticket.. onward journey already traveled and now only return leg to be used.
