They put it on the back of the card so it doesn't interfere with their branding. Amex has *always* put it on the back of their cards, tho in the UK they print a miniature version on the front along with the security code.
+ In the countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Poland (and almost the UK), pretty much every card is contactless, so its presumed to be contactless.
