So, if you want to fly in business class, your best bet is to change to a date that has open R. You can then either use a GPU or miles + copay. I'd probably use the GPU personally, as the out-of-pocket cost is about the same, I'd get more PQDs, and I'd be able to save the miles for a bigger award later.

I called UA, and the agent was nice enough to waive my change fee. Saved $900 there.
So ticket change for flying day earlier was $600. And I got $600 back. And they applied GPU and got instant upgrade. On the way back I am still on the list, and agent said the chances look promising
