Me too, but it was in an Asian hotel where I was leaving the room and knew there were some fresh, unused towels so I put them in a closed drawer thinking I would have extras. The maid must have found them hidden. The towels were gone and the bare minimum was left in the bathroom. I didn't say anything to the hotel, but she was heckbent on me not having extra towels without calling the front desk.

What I wind up doing in SE Asia, where I sometimes shower five times a day, is asking for the towels to be replaced every time I leave the hotel.
