My experience matches yours. Switching from Hertz, I see more cars I like; I've gotten Lincolns, I've gotten
V8 Chargers and Challengers, etc. But almost more importantly, I have had impeccable customer service from National. Always, and at multiple locations. Hertz could learn a lot from them about how to treat customers.
