The agents could (and should) have electronically endorsed the tickets to DL. The E-tkt agreement with DL is rather new and perhaps they were not aware of it. Makes for a process for all. Had it not been so close to departure time, the agents could even a requested the seat category (aisle/window, not the specific seat). The boarding pass would still have to be done by DL.

On a side note: UAIR is said to be developing automated (computer generated, rather than hand written) hotel/meal vouchers. No idea of the roll out date. (Conspiray theory on this is that it is not being for for staff/customer convenience, but for kiosk automation purposes).
