At 1 point per dollar spent, I generate like 500-1000 #1 points a year, tops (pure leisure until this year, when I am doing a lot of business rentals, but still). Just not worth the return. A free-rental day saves me, at most, $30 since my HLE runs that. Spending $500 to save $30?
That's a six percent return, and it's easily-redeemable - better than many other programs. Certainly far better than getting 100 FF miles per day and paying the fees to get them.
Having said that, if you are doing 1- or 2-day rentals, the flat 1000 MR points per rental is a better deal. I do Marriott for short rentals, Hertz points for long ones.
