AA is much the same, although everyone has a collection year from Jan 1 to Dec 31 and AA reduced the status carry-over from two months to one. But if you can manage a lot of flying in a short time then you can earn two years status every two years!

I should probably have noted in my previous post that it is the status earned in the latest collection year that carries on through the following year.
