I recently booked a mileage flight on QF from SYD-SFO in J, connecting on AS to SEA. The SFO-SEA flight is in Y class and it says I'm on the upgrade list. In years past when I did this, I was quickly (within a few weeks of booking) upgraded to F, even though the trip would be months out. For this specific flight, I booked it several months ago and I haven't been upgraded. A few questions:
1) Does F upgrade space usually open up closer to the flight date?
2) What order would an award redemption be on the upgrade list?

It wasn't until recently that upgrades were officially allowed on award fares, so I'd hazard a guess that in the past you've been upgraded as a customer service gesture by reservation agents--I've had this happen a couple of times after calling in for schedule changes. I can't speak to whether AS will open up inventory close to departure, but if none appears, you'll be at the bottom of the list of MVPGs since you're in an award bucket.
