A patent pending is also cheaper to obtain and allows you to see if your idea has wing (no pun intended). It also allows you to sell the idea to other airlines.
But don't disseminate your idea before th application otherwise it is said to be within the public domain and either won't be given or can be challenged.
But I would be surprised if it is a genuinely new idea and think carefully before investing in a patent application.
