Kind of unfortunate. In the past I had an Edy-enabled mileage card- deposit cash, spend at Edy-accepting merchants that don't take credit, earn miles, repeat. Then it stopped working, and I found out that ANA no longer issues new mileage cards with Edy, so if I don't have a phone that supports Mobile Edy (like an iPhone), I can't earn miles that way anymore.
The other issue may be the card can't be recharged with a foreign credit or debit card, limiting its usefulness for manufactured spend, or any use by a non-Japanese resident who does not have a Japanese credit card.
