I even find this ridiculous as some other airlines use 0800 freephone numbers even for non executive passengers or non frequent flier members. When renting with Sixt Heathrow I always make sure I have their direct line so never use 0844 numbers.
OP, you will have to find a way to never use 0844 numbers, call BA international line on skype?

I have been caught out by this too. The "access charge" charged by Three Mobile is actually charged per minute (it is not a one off connection charge). Incredibly misleading and I ended up with a £55 charge when calling Delta's UK number. I threatened to raise with Ofcom and Three refunded the call cost pretty quickly.
