Does anyone have personal knowledge of any local company like a 'Moose Rental Car' type outfit etc, that I might approach for a better deal than the majors are likely to offer?

I figure there will be about 1000-1500 miles of travel involved. With the weak $A - coupled with the sky-high $US price of petrol, and the myriad differing kinds of insurance that I sadly need to sign up for, as nothing from here covers us, am trying to get the rate down as much as I can.
