I fully agree with you, you just need to look for a while and find some great fares. Since i am a Latam Black i dont allways look for the cheaper fare, i look for the cheaper that will let me get an upgrade.
Last April i got my self a SCL GRU LHR ROM R/T, with the chance to get a LHR stopover and with SCL GRU and GRU LHR fly in Tam metal (so is upgradable on any fare) for $649 usd. We did got all the upgrades so even better..... the price for a fly to LHR or ROM is about 1100 so is about 40% less than standar.
Also last Feb i got a SCL HKG fly for 1198 USD on Access fare, so all segments fly by Latam can be updated. We flew SCL AKL SYD HKG R/T to fly more on Lan metal (just SYD to HKG where fly by Cathay). Again all segments with Latam where upgraded, and if you didnt want a Upgrade fare (Base) you could get the tickets for about 960 USD
Now i will give you that is harder to find some cheap deals on the Latam system. But just keep looking.
