Exclamation NJ Transit's Gestapo-like moves annoy

You've got to give NJ Transit credit for keen thinking when it comes to Homeland Security.

With the mere stroke of a pen, NJT's brass made the state oh, so much safer.

(snip)

NJ Transit has taken a more Gestapo-like approach.

In the name of "security," NJT threatens to arrest anyone who takes photos of "their" trains, stations, etc.

Sure, ever since those madmen hijacked those airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center, there has been lots of talk about making America less vulnerable to such attacks.

Banning railfans seems like a Band-Aid approach to terrorism.

(snip)

But back to railfanning. The most perplexing part of NJT's threat to punish those of us taking photos of their equipment without their "permission" is the ban seems to apply everywhere - even if you're standing on the street - which the railroad DOES NOT own. I'd call it Nazi-like, except that the Nazis would shoot the violator (maybe that's next).

Who gave NJT control over the sidewalks, streets, highways and bridges?

And, since the NJT brass has this high opinion of their own power, I'd like to know how they plan to enforce their dictum in Pennsylvania.

Follow-up:

The response to last Wednesday when I vented anger over NJ Transit's concerted effort to harass, embarrass and threaten rail fans who simply want to watch and photograph trains was amazing. The e-mails generated more replies than any previous column and came from far and wide. What's more, all of those sent to my Times e-mail address backed my protest that NJT had gone too far. ^
