Why are some passengers so miserable?

Currently in GF at T5. It’s been fairly quiet with plenty of staff (probably more than I have ever seen before) so no tables overflowing or anything like that. I’m sat in a section of four seats along with my daughter who’s 8 so not a little child. For the past hour or so we have been joined by another passenger. When he arrived he made no effort to ask if the other seats were occupied - they weren’t, but courtesy would suggest you should ask. There may well not have been other groups of seats free so I have no problem with sharing after all it is a public space but is it too much to ask a simple question? At no point did he even attempt to acknowledge our presence despite ‘entering’ our space.

I have no issue with others who wish to go unacknowledged or bothered but surely a simple nod of the head, a smile or even an acceptabce that we were here first would be the polite thing to do.

So the question is, do you acknowledge your fellow travels when you have to share the same space whether that be in the lounge or onboard?
