This thread is stagnant but I thought I'd update.

I registered for EasyPass RTP last Friday before a flight. No appointment was needed. I got to the Bundespolizei booth at FRA about an hour before my non-Schengen European flight. There were two officers and no customers. It took about 12 minutes, and all I needed was the passport. She just glanced at my permanent resident card, and said she didn't need it. She did say that she didn't think it would work immediately, and that it normally required a couple of hours to actualize. But, she said I could try.

I then rushed to security, where the line was long. Next was passport control, and the line for the regular booths was crazy, so I went for the EasyPass lanes hoping it work work. And, IT DID! But, annoyingly you still need to see an officer (it would make sense, I think, to register me as a permanent resident to be able to skip the officer), but that wasn't a big deal. It was great, and I got to the faraway gate in while boarding had already started, but with enough time.

On my return a couple of days later, there wasn't much of a line but I still used it. The officer was happy that I'd registered for it too, and said it's a great way to beat the queues.

So, this is a brilliant option for someone living in Germany, or travelling to/transiting the country often. It's super easy and it's free. Yay for efficiency.
