I assume providing the bottle of champagne was directed by BAEC, rather a cabin crew initiative?

A data point.

On a flight to SEA in August, while travelling in F, the WW cabin crew member kindly provided the OH with a birthday card (it was a birthday trip for a major 0 birthday), but said that she was unable to provide anything more as she would get into trouble. Not a problem at all and the card was a nice gesture.
