In similar situations, I've just added the second name to the reservation, and then asked that they make a note that "xxx will be arriving on their flight before me -- please allow xxx to check-in in advance of my arrival". If they have the same name, even easier. It hasn't been a problem for me when I've actually been in the above situation. If that will work, it should accomplish what you're looking to do.
