Even if they do within 24hrs of the flight, you won't be able to apply GPU anymore.
The only way you'll get a chance is if someone cancels his award seat and you can grab it before somebody else does.
Yes that was an exercise in futility. There were open F seats available on my flight day of departure, but ANA agent would not allow me to use UA GPU.
