This in itself is pretty poor planning on United's part. But to make matters worse, the top listed entry on the main UA.com site under "United news & deals" is about this new hotel booking service:

Worldwide hotel sale
Travel the world and save up to 50% on your hotel stay.

So not only is UA sending customers to a site that won't accept them, they are using up valuable advertising space to do this.
I had no problem today - did not have to join anything until I was ready to actually book and then I was able to join very easily without a problem/.
