They were asking at the "check in" of the gate. The way terminal 3 at LHR is set up is that the gates are big rooms left and right of a corridor, and you have to "check in" to get there (i.e. the process done prior to boarding in the US, is done prior to entering the gate area there). There was a big line of people waiting to "check in" to the gate, and an AA employee came several times asking for volunteers. You could give your name to him, or later, when you actually arrived at the counter.
