For reference -

Several weeks ago, I needed to extend my rental and wanted to switch my payment card midway though the reservation. Phone agent could not do it over the phone so I went to the airport. Airport system would not let them switch the card while the contact was still open either.

Not sure if this is YMMV, but it might be that split payment can be done when the contract is opened and not midway through the contract.
