Another thing to keep in mind...

The majority of the time you fly around, there is another aircraft in front of you going the same direction - and crews are quick to tell ATC if they are flying in less-than-pleasant conditions. The next time you see the seat belt sign illuminate, it could be because flights in front of yours have encountered turbulence that would require everyone buckled up....
