I just flew from SIN - NRT - DTW with some really big butcher knives in my checked luggage. They even scanned my luggage at immigration before letting me out. No problems. I think they were more concerned with the pressure cooker and that all the other odd kitchenware that were in a huge ice chest (no food in there, which was what they were concerned about).
