I would think the newer the systems are, the faster they will be. This may be an advantage of BA introducing WiFi so late on in the game compared to the other competition.
The speeds are limited primarily by the satellites not the onboard equipment. Ku band is good for 70-100Mbps and is what Gogo/BA use. Ka band is used by a few airlines and is theoretically faster but it would require entirely new hardware.
