I always place a typed piece of paper with my name and address on it inside the checked bag (on top of packed items). I also pack items in a very calculated way so that it would be obvious to me if the items had been moved around. Not the best solution, but I do it anyway.

I've received the notes several times on international routes.

I keep the zip ties also, but I always manage to forget to put them on at check in .. I did look up whether they were even allowed by TSA and found that they are or at least were. That surprised me.
