The maximum is four. Although depending on how far apart the arrival and departure times are for the segments in the middle, you may be able to check in online from that city. For example, I had a YEG-YWG-YQT-YYZ-YOW-LGA itinerary one time and because the YQT stop was from 0:48 to 5:15, I was able to OLCI for YEG-YWG-YQT right at the 24 hour mark (but three hours later it gave me an error message when I tried to go through the same process). Waited until 24 hours prior to my YQT-YYZ flight and did OLCI with YQT being my departure city, worked. Then I got an agent at YEG to print all of my BPs.
