You can receive SMS if you have an SMS handling app that can access the wireless carrier's service via WiFi. Examples are iMessage on the iPhone and Message+ by Verizon on Android. I sent and received SMS my whole Delta flight last week. Interestingly, while Delta claims it's only text, I could *receive* images. Just couldn't send them.
I've been able to send standard SMS via Gogo for at least a couple years now (using T-mobile wifi calling).
