Have been dealing with fraudulent charges on my SPG personal account for 6 months; they quieted down back in June but recently heated back up again.
More details here:
Charges can still make it to your compromised card, even after replacement

Was "promised" by a rep on the security team that they would block all charges to the old card number, but I basically laughed as I've been told that a half dozen times already. I insisted on cancellation, got bounced through a few more people, finally to I guess the retention specialist.

He said it was a shame I wasn't directed here earlier as they could have closed the *account* and re-opened a new one, instead of just changing the card number. I said yeah, it's a shame that I was demanding the old number be fully deactivated for months and your people couldn't figure out how to do it or that this would be an option.

I said I would consider going that route if he could credit back the annual fee (posted ~2 months ago), but rather quickly he said he couldn't do that, and didn't counter with anything. (I didn't even think to ask for a bonus point offer as I really was intent on shutting the account).

I have probably $40-50k of annual spend on the card and have had it for I'm guessing 10+ years. Never received an explicit retention offer before, although when they announced the AF increase last year, to be effective something like a week before my renewal date, I called in advanced and asked if they could post the renewal early before the fee increase. They said no, but for some reason the fee still posted at the old rate. So possibly a minor retention offer?

Anyway, account shut. I'm kind of sad, because I liked the card, but have just been very very annoyed at how Amex has handled these fraud issues.

Now need to figure what card to replace with, currently mostly using my Barclay's AA Aviator card. May try the Marriott card...
