Heard back from my friend who said that this is common in some hotels! My friend spent several years in the US and said that it is like making a request for take-out menus at the front desk. He told me to "stop being so American." He asked that I not copy his email or I would. In the email he indicated IHE certain nationalities, closer to the Czech Republic, are more likely to want company.

BTW, I have stayed at three hotels in Prague and never had this offer, although I did at one Asian hotel, non-Marriott. I have seen what I assume is this in some non-US hotels, including a former Marriott, where the pro stops at the front desk on the way in, the hotel calls the room and the pro leaves and ID to be picked up when leaving. When I was waiting for my bus to an early morning flight I saw maybe a half dozen working men/women do this, and heard the front desk call a room to make sure everything was okay when a pro seemed to be leaving. It seemed ordinary and systematic. I have also been propositioned by two pros in a US Marriott hotel elevator, where if I gave them my room number they would stop by my room when they were done in the room where they were headed. No, I did not take them up on their offer.

Bottom line: I could see what the OP described as being what was really said, heard and meant.
