That's interesting. I've had the same issue on with merchants who use recurring charges for unused online subscriptions and make it very difficult to cancel without an hour long call to someone obviously not in the US .... a Mastercard was compromised and I assumed that took care of the problem. Yet, it started up again. So, this isn't unique to Amex.
