I've never had a problem doing this. During check-in I would give the front desk person my MR# and simply say that my co-worker or travel partner was not a member.

Only problem I've encountered is when the travel companion booked using hotels dot com. In that event, I was simply told that we could not get points when we reserve using third parties.
