As long as the OP is a US citizen with a valid US passport and a return ticket (I've never been asked to show it), he will have no problems and can stay for up to 90 days.

Just as it is in the US, only nationality/citizenship matters for entry requirements.

One additional piece of advice, since the OP is so concerned. You may be asked to provide an address where you'll be staying. Since you aren't at a hotel, just have your friend's address handy if you need it. It's a silly requirement for Schengen entry anyway, since many people are not likely to stay in one place or even one country...
