Technically SPG requires 100 nights for the top status, albeit you get a lot of benefits at 50 nights! Overall however I feel that with most chains with the benefits at the top are going to be decreased or they are going to decrease the number of people at the top tiers by increasing the requirements to earn the status.
Add in the fact with SPG & Marriott combined you have a lot more hotels to pick from extra nights should be easier to achieve than they once would have been. It could just get more and more difficult to hold 2 top tier status's for many.
